DescriptionOur Directed Energy team in Albuquerque is looking for an Ultrashort Pulse Laser Lead Engineer to operate, maintain, and improve USPL systems and to setup and perform experiments with USPLs. This is an exciting opportunity to work with modern equipment in cutting-edge laboratories at the Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) on Kirtland AFB, where you will be part of a team that investigates novel USPL phenomenology of both low and high-power systems. If you are a USPL expert and enjoy working in a small team developing new technologies, this is the job for you.Primary Responsibilities

Serve as a USPL Lead Engineer that oversees and conducts USPL experiments in AFRL facilities including use of a peta-watt, femto-second USPL source and a high-energy optical parametric chirped amplifier with tunability laser source.

Oversee and facilitate USPL laser system operations including alignment, optimization, and operation of oscillators and amplifiers.

Perform optical test functions including power, spatial, spectral and temporal characterization of optical beams, devise data capture techniques, and perform data analysis.

Perform laboratory and laser equipment maintenance.

Install new hardware and fixtures to expand laboratory capabilities and capacity.

Provide regular progress reports and maintain timelines for multiple projects.

Basic Qualifications

Possess a bachelor’s degree and 4 – 8 years or a master’s degree with 2 – 6 years’ experience with low and high power, short pulse laser systems, including laser system alignment, diagnostics, repair, and maintenance.

Have strong innovation, analytical and diagnostic skills pertaining to USPL systems.

Understand and abide by Leidos and government safety rules and regulations

Design and implement USPL test diagnostics, capture and analyze data, and write accurate and concise test summary reports.

Work wellwith technical, engineering and management staff.

Acquire and maintain a DoD security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Expert knowledge of high power USPL systems with the ability to lead experiments and troubleshoot and resolve all system issues.

Advanced experience with optical parametric amplifier systems.

Opto-mechanical modelling experience and knowledge of materials.

Proficiency in LabVIEW, CAD, and/or Zemax.

Have an active DoD secret or higher clearance
