POSITION SUMMARY:Requires all around knowledge, experience and skill over and above that set forth in the job description for the basic job, or jobs, involved. Performs duties as set forth in the basic job description in addition to acting in the capacity of "instructor", "trouble shooter", "specialist", or similar categories. Usually is responsible to the Department Supervisor for the quantity and quality of the work of others in the group. An element of leadership is necessary for effective guidance of others, but not to the extent usually associated with the jobs of SUPERVISORY level. Hiring, disciplining, promoting and firing are not contemplated within the scope of this classification. He or she may participate and assist in performance ratings of other employees in the group.Installs, tests and repairs electric light and power distribution circuits and networks. Maintains both high and low voltage power systems, including control systems, communication systems, UPS systems, emergency power systems, CCTV systems and card reader systems. Works from electrical layouts and wiring diagrams. Does limited sizing and design work, updates one-line diagrams as new installations are completed and works directly with scientists on new equipment designs and installations. Works from blueprints, sketches, wiring diagrams and verbal instruction. Performs work in compliance with all applicable codes and standards.SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:May guide, direct and assist in training lower classified personnelMACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:Voltage-ohm meters, circuit testers, electrical lineman's hand tools, conduit benders, mechanic's hand tools, bench lathe, ammeter, test lamps, megger, electrical instruments and basic machine shop equipment.TYPICAL DUTIES:
Inspects, tests and maintains electrical lighting, signal, communication and power distribution circuits and equipment. Isolates equipment and component failures in switches, motors, control panels and a variety of electrical equipment, using electrical test equipment.
Performs layout work for electrical maintenance and construction operations. Installs new panel boxes, circuits and feeder lines to meet load conditions. Performs necessary electrical maintenance work on elevators, hoists, conveyors, electric motors and lighting systems. Replaces or exchanges defective mechanical components such as small motor gears and bearings and electrical parts such as brushes, armatures, resistors, switches, transformers, etc., according to schematic designs.
Performs complex wiring, installation and troubleshooting on motors, generators, switches, transformers, clocks and time systems, intercom systems, paging systems, fuse panels, alarm and signal systems, heating appliances and similar specialized electrical devises. Pulls and installs cable and raceway systems including underground cable. Installs transformer, disconnect switches buss structures and fuses. Installs one-of-a-kind custom-built lab equipment including work with machine shops, engineers and suppliers to procure parts and materials.
Performs basic and routine level work commonly assigned to other trades, (e.g. carpentry or mechanical tasks) where performance of such tasks is incidental to performance of the electrical work or is required in response to an emergency situation
Responds to, troubleshoots and repairs a wide variety of equipment in emergency situations including power failures, lightning strikes, critical equipment failure and fire, alarm and security system faults/failures.
Performs other related duties as requested, requiring comparable levels if knowledge, skill and responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS:High school diploma or equivalent educational training. Completion of approved Journeyman program in the Electrical trade and 3-5 years experience or equivalent combination of formal training and experience. Able to read and write English, make mathematical calculations, understand and use blueprints, wiring and electrical schematics. Knowledge of applicable electrical codes and regulations, including formal training in the most recent version of the National Electrical Code. May require a valid and clean motor vehicle license.
