The Legal Specialist position requires effective management of a large and diversified workload, strong decision-making capabilities, a high level of independent judgment, and a profound understanding of the organization and its business needs. The Legal Specialist initiates and produces complex work with a high level of competence in one or more areas of law, offering crucial support to attorneys and clients. Subject matter areas of support include litigation, business law, employment law, and health law. Specific duties may vary based on departmental and organizational needs.The Legal Specialist demonstrates advanced knowledge and understanding of practice areas, processes, procedures, rules and regulations. In limited practice areas the Legal Specialist appears at mediations and Administrative Court proceedings and participates in settlement negotiations, per Mayo Clinic settlement guidelines. The Legal Specialist provides direction, oversees, mentors, and trains paraprofessionals and support staff. The Legal Specialist exhibits sound legal project management skills, effectively leads teams, serves as a positive change agent, resolves conflict and delegates work.The Legal Specialist provides leadership and serves as an expert in one or more areas of law with proficiency in legal research and analysis. Proactively serves as a leader to advance the legal practice, technology, diversity and inclusion, and quality improvement initiatives. Educates and provides guidance to departments and individual clients on specific legal topics and takes the lead on significant cases, matters, and projects. Leads meetings with staff, clients, and external parties, analyzes complex matters, identifies areas of risk, and provides recommendations with minimal attorney involvement. Ensures that Mayo’s policies, procedures and practices are in compliance with current laws and regulations. Serves as an institutional resource with regard to Mayo policy, strategic priorities, and legal matters including participation on institutional committees and task forces. Identifies, manages and leads initiatives, including but not limited to process improvements.The Legal Specialist in this position will have a primary focus on federal and state regulatory law, including federal and state regulatory compliance, CMS and third-party payer billing requirements, and fraud and abuse, and life science work including FDA regulated biologics, drugs and devices, pharmacy, prescribing matters and clinical research.This vacancy is not eligible for visa sponsorship.This position is primarily remote. However, this individual must live within driving distance from our AZ, FL, Rochester, MN, or Eau Claire, WI Mayo Clinic site.Cover letter and Resume are required for application consideration.QualificationsThe Legal Specialist position requires:

Bachelor’s degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal educational program with 5 years relevant legal experience; or

Bachelor’s degree and a paralegal certificate from an ABA certified program with 5 years relevant legal experience; or

Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant legal experience including at least 3 years of senior-level legal experience; or

Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree.

The Legal Specialist position prefers:

Successful completion/passing of PACE (Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam); or

other professional designations, advanced training or certifications; or

a Master's degree.

Must demonstrate a thorough understanding of laws, rules and regulations and its processes, and show expertise in one or more area(s) of law. Possess leadership, team building, and strong problem-solving abilities, and works collaboratively with legal staff, patients, consultants, allied health staff, and leadership. Proficiency in the English language, along with excellent writing and communication skills, is essential. Demonstrate exceptional organizational, and interpersonal relationship skills. Display strong leadership skills, project management skills, and the ability to take the lead on projects. Ingenuity, creativity, and self-motivation are needed to perform this job. Exhibit significant independent judgment with minimal direction and oversight, as well as excellent decision-making capabilities. Ability to self-direct, work independently, and manage multiple priorities is required in a fast-paced environment. Possess excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to manage complex legal work and projects requiring legal analysis and exercising discretion. Must be able to compose legal documents and demonstrate persuasion and negotiation skills. Exhibit competence in various technologies relevant to the role.
