Job DescriptionThis role is responsible for power systems forecast development for renewable resources. A Power Systems Forecaster works to forecast, track, and evaluate renewable energy resources as well as conducts the enrollment activities for new variable energy resources into the forecast process. Provides subject matter expertise and guidance in the enhancement and support of all required data and modeling to continuously improve renewable resource forecasting. Analyzes Numerical Weather Prediction Models and translates forecasted information to daily needs for renewable forecasting.What You Will Be Doing:

Forecasting and monitoring renewable energy resources on the system.

Organizes and provides timely maintenance of databases housing historic real-time, hourly, and daily weather, renewable resources, renewable generator outages, economic, demographic, and other pertinent data.

Creates, maintains, and analyzes databases as required for effective optimization of renewable forecasting.

Evaluates potential inefficiencies in current procedures and recommends improvements.

Develops hypotheses to improve forecasting accuracy for renewables. In conjunction with peers, researches, develops, and creates plans to enhance the solar forecast and other energy models through the use of statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualization techniques.

Develops and implements new analytics tools and interfaces using computer programming.

Uses software to retrain the solar prediction models and/or other modeling methods to prove or disprove forecast hypotheses and analyzes the results.

Validates and improves the accuracy of daily solar forecasts.

Provides meteorological insight and forecasting support to Operations and other internal groups as necessary.

Provides technical expertise on all aspects of onboarding and validating variable energy resources to ensure timely, accurate and consistent detailed short-term solar forecasts are used in the real-time and day-ahead markets.

Availability to work weekends and non-standard hours as needed is required.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree (BA, BS) or equivalent education, training or experience in Statistics, Math, Computer Science, Economics, Data Science, Atmospheric Science/Meteorology, Engineering, or closely related field. (Atmospheric Science/Meteorology degree preferred)

Amount of Experience

This is an entry level position, but any pre or post-graduate experience will be considered favorably

Skills and Abilities:

Forecasting Weather, Load and/or Renewable Resources

Experience in one or more of the following programming languages is desired; SQL/Oracle, R-Studio, Python, VBA, or similar.

Ability to think strategically and devise solutions to problems in keeping with multiple considerations.

Ability to effectively communicate complex materials and concepts.

Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and PowerBI, along with and data retrieval and manipulation in multiple database formats.

Strong background and application of mathematics, statistics, and probabilities

Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.

Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication and documentation skills required, with a demonstrated attention to detail.

Ability to use pattern recognition, deductive reasoning, and analytical thinking with sound judgement and decision-making skills.

Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills are also essential.

Must be self-starting and willing and able to work independently in a dynamic corporate organization under pressure of tight forecasting deadlines and forecast performance expectations.
