This posting is for an Engineering Technician I in the Halifax County District 1 Office. This entry level position serves as an inspector on roadway and structure projects supporting higher level technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts and/or District Office duties. This position is responsible for monitoring the contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications. Specific duties will include but are not limited to observing and documenting the contractor’s operations, making measurements and calculations of pay quantities, and performing standardized material sampling and testing. The selected employee must be proficient in record keeping. This position may be required to coordinate reviews of technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests, subdivision design standards, and road addition packages. This employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing. The employee may be expected to either work independently or as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors. This position will ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Daily duties will include keeping daily inspector diaries on project operations, completing various material reports including materials received, documenting pay records, performing construction calculations, and computer/iPad data and record entry.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesApplicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

Additional ExpectationsThe selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Employee may drive or place survey stakes, operate surveying instruments, cut brush, run test on materials, all in accordance with established policy and procedures. Inspect roadway and bridge projects. Employee will be required to have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments to read plan details, to make accurate heights over water or traffic, and climbing on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. Must be able to safely perform manual tasks involving the use of bush axes and other tools on steep and rough terrain. Work outside in various types of weather, terrain, and hours. Employee must be able to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be proficient in record keeping. This position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes.Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsSome state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
