Work with kids - Part-time bike safety skills educator (bilingual)

As a Bike Safety Skills Educator, you will be crucial to the success and sustainability of our Safe Routes to School program. In the role, you will give your time and skills to support students, schools and communities. Through this work, you will be developing community leaders through mentoring – using a bicycle as the vehicle for change.

Description of Roles and Responsibilities

Duties include:

- Support youth in learning to ride a bike or walk consistent with traffic rules and safety practices;

- Help set-up and break-down obstacle courses;

- Load and unload supplies from bikes storage, set out cones, put up signs;

- Distribute and collect liability waivers;

- Check equipment and bikes and make sure they're ready to ride (put air in tires, adjust seat level, etc.);

- Fit participants with properly sized helmet and bicycle and perform helmet and bike checks for students’ personal equipment;

- Assist in course facilitation: manipulate props, give instruction, encouragement and feedback to students;

- Conduct site and safety management for dynamic activities;

- Become familiar with procedures and protocols for safety and working with minors at each school, partner organization, or community center

Requirements

- Conversational Spanish language skills are required.

- Be culturally aware and respectful of different ways participants dress, style their hair, and communicate with adults (e.g., helmets might need extra adjusting)

- Be respectful of all participants’ body types and sizes

- Enjoy working with youth in a calm, non-controlling manner

- Interest in bicycling and education

- Be punctual

- Submit to a criminal background check

- Perform light to moderate lifting. (Note: If you have physical limitations which prevent you from lifting, let the program coordinator know so we can evaluate accommodations.)

Worksite Location(s)/Schedule

Our bicycle safety skills courses are taught at schools and community organizations, or at community events, in Durham. Typically, these courses are taught on weekdays during the school hours between 7am and 4pm. Occasionally, we participate in weekend events. Shift duration is typically 2-3 hours per event (including breaks), not to exceed 15 hours per week.
