While it is preferred the selected candidate reside and work in Akron, the position may be located from any one of our major offices within the FirstEnergy footprint (Akron OH, Greensburg PA, Reading PA, Fairmont WV, Williamsport MD, Holmdel NJ).Summary:The Vice President, Environment, Health & Safety is responsible for providing strategic leadership and vision, ensuring that environmental and safety programs are implemented effectively and in compliance with government regulations. This position works closely with the senior management team and is responsible for the overall creation, development, deployment, and maintenance of an effective and sustainable environment, health & safety program. This requires working closely with and engaging the business to support current and future business objectives. It is accountable, along with the leadership team, for performance against the organization’s stated environment, health & safety performance goals.This position provides direction and leadership from the following perspectives:

Lead efforts in developing, implementing, fostering, and sustaining a world class environment and safety culture where employees and contractors own, promote, and reinforce safe behaviors and feel empowered to speak up.

Influence and coach business leaders on development of robust action plans to improve environment, health, and safety performance and to implement strategy moving forward.

Stay well versed in and ensure the company complies with all state, federal, and local regulatory requirements.

Establish and develop substantive working relationships with peers, staff, corporate safety, and union leadership, and create an environment and implement changes, where needed, to enhance FirstEnergy’s culture of safety, compliance, inclusion, accountability, performance excellence, and innovation.

Deliver results on an established and standardized metrics/dashboard to measure performance, including a robust assessment / audit process to demonstrate compliance with all laws and regulations.

Create a clear and standardized approach for review and reporting of all accidents, incidents, near misses, etc. including the investigation. This would include review of any subsequent remedial measures, efforts, and plans.

Initiate and monitor implementation of appropriate environmental and safety safeguards in accordance with applicable regulations and professional practice to ensure that employee, community, and environmental hazards and impacts of operational activities are eliminated or reduced to acceptable risk levels.

Plan, organize, develop, and monitor the performance of assigned directors, managers, supervisors and staff, establishing performance requirements and personal development targets, monitor performance, and provide executive direction for performance improvement and development.

Plan, organize, control, integrate, and evaluate the work of the group

Direct and prepare program budgets, establish budgetary control measures, allocate resources and personnel, and monitor programs for compliance with budget guidelines.

Lead, develop, implement, and maintain environmental and safety programs, training, policies, and procedures based on leading indicators and actions.

Maintain environmental and safety records, analyze trends, report on statistics, and manage non-compliance.

Provide leadership for the Labor Safety Management Committee.

Serve as the Company’s liaison with OSHA, FE Legal, consultants, and attorneys contracted by the Company and/or insurance carriers to investigate and review general liability and claims made against the Company.

Qualifications:

Accomplished and approachable leader, with a demonstrated track record of safe operations excellence and people leadership

Fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible experience in related field; electric utility industry experience is strongly preferred, to include at least ten (10) years of management experience.

Bachelor’s degree in related field of study required. Advanced degree is preferred.

Prior leadership responsibility for environmental, health, safety, and human performance programs / systems

Strategic vision and continuous improvement mindset

Demonstrated track record of driving safety excellence and establishing applicable programs, policies, and best practices

In-depth knowledge of environmental and safety regulations and compliance

Specific knowledge and experience requirements include:

Advanced administrative principles and methods, including strategic goal setting, organizational analysis, program development, and implementation

Federal, state, and local laws, regulations affecting the utility industry

Critical thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Demonstrated execution of strategic and operational initiatives

Excellent interpersonal communication skills and flexibility to interact with all levels of employees

Proven ability to work in a cross-functional setting

Prior facilitation and support of process improvement projects and advanced change management principles

Ability to:

Lead by example, facilitate and lead teams through change, and promote the values of trust and integrity

Analyze difficult and complex issues and strategies, reach sound and logical fact-based conclusions and recommendations

Understand, interpret, explain, and apply local, state, and federal policy, law, regulation

Lead, facilitate and/or participate in the strategic planning, organization design, implementation, and monitoring of comprehensive programs

Evaluate departmental practices and make sound recommendations for improvements; develop and implement appropriate procedures and controls

Exercise sound expert independent judgment within general policy guidelines

Communicate and respond to inquiries or complaints from employees, customers, regulatory agencies or members of the community
