A Research Intern position is available in the Department of Translational Molecular Pathology.Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are a heterogenous group of transcripts that by definition are not translated into proteins. Several major ncRNA classes, such as microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been implicated in various human diseases. Decades after their discovery and despite many comprehensive functional genomics projects such as ENCODE and FANTOM, the full spectrum of ncRNA roles remain to be elucidated. ncRNAs play crucial roles in the functioning of almost every cell type and tissue, and their differential expression has been reported in a large variety of pathologies ranging from cancer, cardiovascular and infectious diseases, to neurological disorders. We focus on the identification of their mechanism of action on fundamental pathways related to human diseases as well as their potential use as biomarkers and therapeutic agents.LEARNING OBJECTIVES
to perform properly the techniques related to ncRNA research including gene expression by qRT-PCR, cloning of micronRNAs and long ncRNAs in vectors for cell transfections
to study the cell-to-cell communication based on the mobility of microRNAs; to master the proper techniques of extracellular vesicles
to study the literature related to the roles on noncoding RNAs in cancer and in disease generally
discuss with the PI on the data analyses and troubleshooting and develop an analytical thinking related to the results
to participate at all steps of the manuscript writing and figure preparation
to develop good skills and working protocols for reproducibility
to participate in grant writing classes and develop the skills necessary to write fellowships and grants in addition to manuscripts
to attend scientific meetings on topic of research and also outside of this to develop large sets of knowledge
