The VPR reports to the President of the University of Utah (UofU). The VPR oversees 16 administrative units who are committed to providing quality support, resources, and strategic investments to the UofU’s research community. This is an inaugural position and would collaborate with three other Associate Vice Presidents for Research ( AVPR ) teams under the VPR . This position has the potential of carrying an academic appointment, but it is not a requirement. If the candidate is seeking an academic appointment, then hiring will be coordinated with the recruiting home college & department.The position will play a pivotal role in formulating and integrating plans to expand existing areas of UofU research strengths. This will be accomplished by partnering with key stakeholders in the state, federal, or industry sectors while also steering the research enterprise towards emerging technology and marketsResponsibilitiesWork with the VPR , the AVPRs and staff on realizing the vision and mission of the VPR’s public engagement and research impact goals; to lead, grow and support the research activities on campus. Represent the VPR office across the entire campus and at local and national meetings. Work closely with the VPR on developing and implementing strategic plans for growing the UofU research portfolio efficiently and effectively.Essential Functions include:Identify robust interdisciplinary research areas that are primed to intersect with the highest level of strategic funding opportunities. Determine best operating infrastructure, administrative support needs, and key stakeholders for engagement. Develop short- and long-term sustainability plans to grow the area of strength and to position the UofU to offer a leading research epicenter for emerging technologies and applications.Engage with faculty to create and enhance research infrastructure to grow interdisciplinary pursuits with external partners that align with the societal impact and economic development goals of the UofU. Lead the UofU established Institutes and VPR supported HUBs; interdisciplinary research groups poised to expand their impact and competitiveness for federally sponsored center grants.Liaise between the VPR and the non-profit UofU research affiliated org with an emphasis on economic engagement.Oversee a corporate development and engagement specialist that will assist with driving industry partnerships towards research programs and initiatives that focus on workforce development and economic impact.Strategic planning, problem solving, and direct input into building and maintaining organization structures within or affiliated with the UofU.Minimum QualificationsThe successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of federal, state, foundation, and industry funding agencies. The AVPRSP should have expertise and experience starting and/or leading large, collaborative research organizational structures such as an academic institute, national laboratory programs, agency related experience or a non-profit affiliate university organization such as a University Affiliated Research & Development Center, a Federally Funded Research & Development Center, etc. In addition, the candidate should have experience with innovative research development programs, and research administration. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential, including the ability to work with faculty, staff and students across campus, external state, federal and industry partners, and with senior University leaders. The candidate must also have demonstrated success in grant writing.The candidate will be familiar with non-biomedical and biomedical research and have demonstrated strengths in interdisciplinary research partnerships/relationships.
