Autistic young man looking for support, in home, community. Must have excellent adventure skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and be willing to learn diabetic care and procedures.
All shifts, 24/7. FT PT MTWTh week. FSSnM weekend.
Sober and tobacco free. LGBTQ friendly. This is not babysitting.
THE DETAILS
Direct support for 23 yo adventurous young man with ASD and diabetes managed with insulin pens and CGM.
Here on our hobby farm & small town, engaging community activities. Hiking, walking, cycling, Swimming holes and community volunteering.
the openings:
Weekdays M,T,W,Th
Mornings 7-3 pm
Afternoon shift 12-7pm(somewhat flexible depending on the season)these maybe volunteer opportunities, swimming holes, cycling, field trips. Some skill building activities for learning daily living and personal care.
Weekend F,S,Sn,M (field trips, road trips, fun-runs)
Fun activity-based learning is the foundation of all supports. He thrives with co-learning and doing.
Who:
Young and young at heart,able bodied adults to support my son in his strengths and talents as he seeks to achieve his best self living an interesting life worthy of his potential.
Morning person(s) to help him get his day started, following his rhythm of rising and shining from 7am upto 3pm (longer on days with day-trips).
Afternoon persons to help him navigate his projects and interests from home based projects to community volunteering and special events. From, 12-7pm (longer if its required)
There is a comfortable guest room for late nights or sleepovers.
Weekends may include overnights and occasional travel.
Hours can be negotiated for the best fit for all but they must be consistent.
Persons need to be patient and playful, be firm, consistent, organized and flexible in exploring his curiosity with him, role modeling manners and good social skills along the way. You’ll be trained in his style of learning and doing.
You’ll need to be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID, have a valid drivers license, a reliable car/truck with good tires. Be a non-smoker, non-vaping, sober and RELIABLE.
He is classically autistic, using AAC and body language to communicate his consent and dissent.
Supporting persons will be trained in co-commmunicating with his AAC, co-adventuring, co-creating.
Lead support persons will be responsible for managing his diabetes, it’s easy once you learn how.
Him:
He loves sauntering in nature, weather, wind, skiing, swimming, cycling, horses, arts & crafts, finger painting, co-cooking & baking. Farmers markets, parade watching, outdoor concerts. He loves being a wall flower at familiar events supported by people he trusts.
There is opportunity to travel with him on field trips, road trips, Vermont Special Olympics, 5-K fundraisers, family gatherings in NH. There will be some overnight opportunities as well.
Transformational relationships evoke the most joyful and highest efforts from him. He’s actually very social and very clever with a silly sense of humor. He seeks mentors who see him and listen to understand his thinking & doing, meeting him where hes at in his world.
No credentials or dogmas required to join Graham’s constellation of support persons. We will train, teach and learn with the right persons
Calling outdoor enthusiasts, student teachers, OT, PT, SLP, PE undergraduates - this is an excellent opportunity to share learning with an adventurous autist.
Pay and terms of employment:
you must be a US citizen, pass a background ck by ARIS
$22/hr training wage, $25/hr after first 60hrs of satisfactory supporting of him. Training opportunities in his AAC, diabetes, behavior support and adaptive accommodations creation and application.
