Virginia Community Food Connections (VCFC), a regional local food access organization, is immediately seeking candidates to operate the VCFC Market Token and Nutrition Incentive Program at the Route 639 Farmers Market (639FM) and Bowling Green Farmers Market (BGFM) in Caroline County, Virginia.

The purpose of the program is to provide Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) access and Nutrition Incentives to SNAP recipients at 639FM and BGFM. The goal is to encourage their use of SNAP benefits at the farmers market to purchase healthy, farm-fresh food. Increasing SNAP purchases at farmers markets is a win-win situation. It helps customers by gaining access to affordable fruits and vegetables, it helps farmers by increasing their sales, and it helps the community be a healthier, more welcoming place.

VCFC operates the Market Token Program in Caroline County as follows:

Route 639 Farmer Market, Thursdays 3:30 “ 7:30pm, May 2 “ September 19

7278 Ladysmith Road, Ruther Glen, VA

Bowling Green Farmers Market, Saturdays 8:30am “ 1:30pm, May 4 “ October 19

The Market Token Operator is a seasonal, part-time position. The Market Token Operator is responsible for on-site token program operations at 639FM and BGFM and for after-market token reconciliation and reporting for each market.

Specifically, tasks include:

1. At Market Operations: Being present every market day that VCFC operates the token program during market season (up to 9 hours per week)

Completing SNAP EBT and nutrition incentive transactions

Distributing SNAP and nutrition incentive tokens to customers for each transaction

Providing great customer service - answering vendor and customer questions and explaining use of tokens and incentives for market shopping

Collecting tokens from vendors at the end of the market (vendor redemptions)

Acting as liaison between vendors and VCFC staff

Transporting, setting up and breaking down market tent/equipment on market day

Assisting with at-market implementation of any additional VCFC food access programs

2. After Market Reconciliation: Completing reconciliation within 48 hours of the end of each market is required (1-2 hours per market, or up to 4 hours per week)

Accurately counting market token bank and reconciling with transaction activity

Accurately counting and recording vendor redemptions

Completing reconciliation reports in Excel and in online tracking program

Uploading reports no later than 48 hours following the end of the market

Completing post season reconciliation and reporting, as necessary

Additional requirements:

Ability to input data into Excel spreadsheet and understanding of basic bookkeeping concepts to complete the reconciliation is essential

Must have access to a computer with Excel loaded on it, internet access, and be able to print, scan and email occasional documents

Must be able to safely lift and carry 25-50 pounds

Willing to work outdoors in all types of weather

A successful candidate will have excellent customer service skills, strong language skills and show cultural competency. It is an added benefit if the candidate is fluent in Spanish. We also welcome current or former SNAP recipients who could serve as farmers market ambassador in their community. Other key attributes include a passion for healthy food and for the betterment of the community.

This position requires advance training in the Fredericksburg area that includes 2 to 3 Saturdays at the Spotsylvania Farmers Market, 1-2 reconciliation process trainings, and a pre-season all-hands training meeting. The Market Token Operator would be paid for up to 14 hours per week at $12.00 per hour (hours will decrease to 6-7 hours/week after close of 639FM). Applicants will be interviewed in person, will be required to provide recent references and be subject to a background check. This is an independent contractor position. The selected applicant will sign a subcontractor agreement and will be thoroughly trained in advance of starting at the 639FM and BGFM.
