PRIMARY FUNCTION:

As a member of the Systems Engineering & Operations Support (SEOS) group, the Systems Engineer 2 (SE2) works to ensure the stability, integrity, security and efficient operation of information systems that support core organizational functions. Members of the Systems Engineering (SE) team achieve this result by monitoring, maintaining and optimizing servers & data storage systems, virtualization systems, server operating systems & software, backup systems, infrastructure systems and critical business applications. Team members in this role also function as liaisons with business units, working to design and implement infrastructure projects that support those business lines.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research, design, install, configure, administer, maintain and support server/storage hardware, server/storage operating systems, server/storage virtualization, connectivity and critical applications.
  • Design, acquire, install, maintain and support new hardware, systems and applications.
  • Understand the infrastructural architecture and system interrelationships, and lead efforts to troubleshoot infrastructure systems or components.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including system diagrams, system overviews, system inventories, installation & configuration guides, operating procedures, maintenance & troubleshooting guides, training materials and disaster recovery plans.
  • Promote and adhere to information security policies; ensure that all computing systems and usage of those systems comply with approved policies & industry best practices.
  • Review information security reports; develop and implement action plans to remediate potential security vulnerabilities or risks.
  • Install and maintain hardware, firmware, hot fixes, patches and system updates as appropriate.
  • Research, design, configure, monitor and maintain Active Directory organizational units, group policy objects, user objects, group objects and permissions. Ensure that system accounts comply with policies and password complexity requirements.
  • Design, configure, and administer systems monitoring applications; update monitoring systems in conjunction with infrastructure and application design changes; take appropriate actions to prevent system outages; resolve incidents or alerts in a timely fashion.
  • Provision and maintain SEOS equipment in local and remote corporate data centers.
  • Coordinate with the Facilities department for data center projects, maintenance or repairs involving electrical power distribution systems, environmental controls, and life safety systems.
  • Design, operate and maintain the enterprise backup infrastructure and disaster recovery resources.
  • Ensure that all system backups are properly completed; promptly resolve any issues with system backups or backup job failures or issues with the enterprise backup infrastructure.
  • Lead projects or tasks focused on infrastructure design, installing new hardware systems or software applications, upgrading existing systems or applications, or resolving recurring issues. Assist other SEOS team members with projects or tasks to which they may be assigned.
  • Adhere to licensing requirements; ensure SEOS computing systems are properly licensed.
  • Assist the End User Services (EUS) team and other SEOS team members with advanced application and desktop support. Partner with business units and external vendors to resolve issues.
  • Participate in a periodic 24 x 7 on-call support rotation.
  • Comply with all published enterprise level policies and procedures including, but not limited to, Risk Management policies.
  • Complete all required, ongoing enterprise level training including, but not limited to BSA, OFAC, and Information Security.
  • Report all Risk Management Policy violations in accordance with policy.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by the supervisor/manager.

Knowledge:

  • Detailed understanding of and engineering/troubleshooting abilities for Microsoft server and workstation technologies including Windows operating systems, Active Directory, Azure Active Directory (AAD), Group Policy, Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Distributed File System (DFS), Exchange Server, Skype for Business Server, Internet Information Services (IIS), file/printer sharing, NTFS file/folder permissions, Windows Software Update Services (WSUS), Systems Center Operations Manager (SCOM) & Configuration Manager (SCCM), server security and public key infrastructure (PKI) systems.
  • Detailed understanding of and engineering/troubleshooting abilities for hardware virtualization systems, with a focus on VMware technologies (VMware ESXi Server).
  • Detailed understanding of and engineering/troubleshooting abilities for system backup & replication technologies (Veritas NetBackup and Zerto), for archiving systems (Veritas Enterprise Vault) and for mobile device management systems (BlackBerry Unified Endpoint Management).
  • Detailed understanding of and troubleshooting abilities for networking and storage systems (NetApp or Pure Storage technologies) and for security management & monitoring systems.
  • Detailed understanding of and troubleshooting abilities for hardware systems and blade technologies, with a focus on Cisco UCS technologies or HPE ProLiant server/blade systems.
  • Detailed understanding of data center operations such as equipment installations/removals, cable routing/installation, power distribution systems, and computer room air-conditioning systems.
  • Detailed understanding of TCP/IP and networking.
  • Working knowledge of database systems (Microsoft SQL Server), storage area networks (SAN) and network-attached storage (NAS) systems (NetApp & Pure Storage technologies), industry-standard scripting languages such as VBScript and PowerShell, and Linux-based operating systems.

  • Ability to effectively represent the IT team in meetings with partners, vendors, and end users.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to non-technical staff members.
  • Ability to create detailed documentation, develop training materials and train team members.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Information Technology, or an appropriate combination of education and significant relevant work experience (preferred).
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) (preferred) or VMware Certified Professional (VCP) (preferred).
  • Experience working in enterprise-level computing environments, designing, implementing, maintaining and updating hardware systems, virtual systems, networks and software components, with up-to-date Windows / VMware systems engineering and systems administration skills (required).
