BASIC PURPOSEUnder general direction of a Sergeant, performs all duties of the rank of Police Officer, plus first level supervision to an assigned shift in the absence of a Sergeant. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe following statements reflect the general duties and responsibilities of this classification but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing. The incumbent is also expected to meet the City's standards for interpersonal and team behaviors, customer contacts, and supervision. Incumbents may also perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or to meet current workload needs.

Responsible for all duties and beat responsibilities assigned to a Police Officer.

Assists in the supervision of field personnel and in the absence of the Sergeant, will assume the Sergeant's daily administrative responsibilities.

Coordinate and collaborate with squad Sergeant to ensure cohesive command and leadership of the squad.

Assists the Sergeant in assessing the performance of assigned staff by providing input for evaluations; provides training, direction, and assistance to Officers; mentors Officers and provides guidance as needed.

Provides Sergeant with information and status of squad activities.

Assists with field training duties (i.e. basic patrol functions and related duties) for new hire and lateral Officers in the absence of a Field Training Officer; reports and documents abilities, deficiencies, and progress of probationary Officers.

Assists in resolving employee complaints and concerns.

Assists Sergeant with roll call training.

Represents the Police Department and actively supports the Department's mission, vision, and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities When the Sergeant Is On Duty:

Handles calls for service in an assigned patrol beat; safeguards the lives, property, and constitutional rights of citizens.

Provides guidance and advice to Officers to ensure policies and applicable laws are applied.

Enforces laws and ordinances; investigates criminal activity and violations; issues citations and notices of infractions; books offenders into detention facilities.

Coordinates activities with other law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions in accordance with established policy and procedure.

Utilizes and maintains a variety of specialized equipment such as: firearms, police vehicles, radios, batons, handcuffs, flares, breathalyzer devices, fire extinguishers, and other authorized equipment according to Department policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities When the Sergeant Is Not On Duty:

Assumes the role of ranking Officer for an assigned squad; takes over operational responsibility of field patrol units.

Supervises Officers on an assigned squad; delegates work activities, reviews the work of assigned staff, and coordinates schedules.

Meets with staff to discuss and resolve daily priorities, workload, and technical issues; makes effective suggestions and recommendations and inspects work performed to assure quality work products and effective use of resources.

Documents pertinent information and communicates with Sergeants and management.

Conducts roll call, assigns beats, and provides pertinent information to patrol personnel.

Assesses the nature and urgency of a call upon arrival to the scene; immediately determines the circumstances and persons involved in relation to the nature of the call; determines if the situation warrants routine or emergency response and if other Officers and/or resources should be called to the scene.

Reviews/approves reports and monitors assigned cases; approves Officer's reports.

Ensures Department policy and training are followed; documents use of force events per Department policy.

Monitors, terminates as needed, and documents pursuits per Department policy.

Accepts complaints and conducts initial investigations as needed.

Assists with use of force investigations or other calls requiring an on-duty supervisor.

Completes administrative assignments in support of the squad such as but not limited to: time keeping, equipment tracking, vehicle maintenance documentation, etc.

QUALIFICATIONSMust have three (3) years general authority experience as a law enforcement officer and one (1) year general authority experience as a Lacey Police Officer and must be off probation.Required to attend and successfully complete a departmental approved, formal field supervisor training program within one year of promotion. Maintain proficiency in driving, the use of firearms, defensive tactics and in arrest control techniques in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.Failure to complete the mandatory qualifications within the specified time limits may be grounds for removal from this position. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of:

Pertinent federal, state, county, and local laws and the criminal justice system.

Public agencies and surrounding jurisdictions for coordination of information pertinent to cases.

Read, understand, explain, and enforce pertinent laws, rules, and procedures.

Use and care of firearms and a variety of law enforcement equipment such as vehicles, radios, radar units, cameras, breathalyzers, and fingerprint kits.

Write clear, concise, and accurate reports.

Administer first-aid.

Drive a police vehicle skillfully and defensively.

Perform necessary physical activities.

Defend oneself and the public in physical confrontations.
