Anticipated Salary: $47,616.00 to $50,400.00 DOE.

About the role:

As Accounting Technician III, you will report directly to the Assistant Controller and be a key member of Accounting Services, within the Division of Administrative Services. This advanced, journey-level role requires a thorough understanding of financial record-keeping and a solid grasp of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting:

Assemble and compile data for financial reports and analysis.

Maintain accounting records for various funds, programs, and activities.

Prepare reconciliations for accounts such as sponsor receivables, tuition fees and waivers, dishonored checks, cash receipts, and bank deposits.

Technical Expertise:

Create, troubleshoot, and analyze complex spreadsheets and advanced queries.

Resolve computer application errors in collaboration with relevant personnel.

Participate in the testing of financial software upgrades and implementations, including transaction/data entry and data output testing.

Policy Communication:

Interpret and explain university policies, auxiliary regulations, and funding agency guidelines to faculty, staff, students, and external parties.

Disburse funds after verifying compliance with university regulations.

Prepare monthly adjusting and year-end closing journal entries.

Loan and Collection Management:

Administer loan programs including Perkins, Nursing, and Dream Loans.

Develop and monitor special payment plans and perform all student account collection activities.

Coordinate the placement of delinquent loans with collection agencies and manage accounts sent to the Department of Education.

Process and send dunning letters to students.

Student Accounts and Inquiries:

Manage student, sponsor, and collection accounts, including analyzing and adjusting accounts as necessary.

Respond to BankMobile and 1098-T inquiries and assist with tuition calculation set-ups.

Meet with students to address account issues, billing, refunds, direct deposits, and other financial concerns.

Process and validate electronic sponsor and student refunds.

Reconciliations and Reports:

Prepare and analyze reconciliations for various accounts.

Compile data for financial reports and audits.

Review documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards.

Support and Collaboration:

Provide technical support by assembling and analyzing account data.

Serve on appeal committees and participate in departmental research.

Assist with daily cash reconciliations and other backfill duties as needed.

Maintain and distribute parking permit inventory.

Prepare and execute group post processes to student accounts.

Support departmental communications through portal messaging, webpage updates, and emails.

Provide backup support and assume additional work assignments as required during absences or periods of increased workload.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Equivalent to four years of progressively responsible financial record-keeping experience, or any combination of education and experience, which has provided the above knowledge and abilities.

Analytical Skills: Proficient in analyzing financial data and resolving discrepancies.

Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and financial software.

Regulatory Knowledge: Familiar with GAAP, FERPA, and relevant policies and procedures.

Communication: Strong ability to convey complex financial information clearly and effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using PeopleSoft Finance or other computerized accounting systems.

Collections experience.

Two or more years of college with an accounting emphasis.

California State University or other higher education experience or other government experience.

Proficient at using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.

Working knowledge of databases and reporting.

Demonstrated history of providing excellent Customer Service.
