Test Kitchen Assistant (Hourly, Contract Position)

Overview

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Test Kitchen Assistant to support daily operations in our test kitchen. This role focuses on recipe development support, inventory management, and ensuring the workspace is clean, efficient, and well-stocked. Ideal for a current line cook or sous chef seeking improved work–life balance, this position offers a consistent Monday–Friday schedule with no nights or weekends.

Key Responsibilities

Product Preparation

Assist with creating test samples according to specifications and production needs.

Follow established procedures for labeling, packaging, and documenting sample batches.

Pack and prepare samples for shipping, ensuring accuracy and quality standards.

Recipe Support & Documentation

Write, update, and organize recipes and formulation notes as directed.

Maintain accurate records of changes, test results, and sample versions.

Support small-scale testing or trial runs when needed.

Inventory & Ingredient Management

Monitor ingredient levels and restock as needed.

Receive, store, and track inventory with proper labeling and rotation.

Maintain a clean, organized ingredient storage system.

Communicate supply needs proactively to keep operations running smoothly.

Kitchen Maintenance & Sanitation

Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, tools, and equipment daily.

Maintain an orderly work environment, ensuring compliance with food safety standards.

Coordinate deep-cleaning tasks on a routine schedule.

Shipping & Logistics

Organize and pack outgoing sample shipments.

Ensure proper documentation and tracking for all outgoing sample packages.

Maintain shipping supplies and communicate restocking needs.

Administrative & Computer Tasks

Use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) for documentation, logs, inventory lists, and communication.

Enter production data and recipe information accurately.

Assist with simple administrative tasks related to kitchen operations.

Qualifications

3–5+ years of culinary experience, ideally as a line cook, prep cook, or sous chef.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to follow precise instructions and maintain consistency.

Comfortable working in a test-kitchen environment with variable workload (very fast-paced during busy periods).

Basic computer proficiency, especially in MS Office Suite.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.

Spanish speaking is a plus.

Role Details

Schedule: Monday–Friday, regular daytime hours.

Status: Hourly, contractor role.

Paid Time Off / Holidays: None.
