Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Powder Coater to join our production team. The Powder Coater will be responsible for preparing parts and applying a precise, high-quality finish to various metal products using electrostatic powder coating equipment. Success in this role requires a strong focus on quality control, safety, and adherence to production schedules.
Key Responsibilities
Preparation and Setup
· Part Preparation: Clean, mask, plug, and prepare metal components for the powder coating process, ensuring surfaces are free of grease, dirt, and contaminants (e.g., using chemical baths, sanding, or grit blasting).
· Hanging/Racking: Properly hang or rack parts on the conveyor system to ensure optimal coating coverage and efficient workflow.
· Equipment Setup: Select and mix the appropriate powders, set up and adjust spray guns, hoppers, and booth controls based on part specifications and coating requirements.
Application and Finishing
· Coating Application: Apply powder coating material evenly and consistently to parts using electrostatic spray equipment, maintaining the specified film thickness.
· Curing: Monitor and control oven temperatures and curing times to ensure the coating is properly cured, achieving maximum durability and finish quality.
· Quality Control: Inspect finished parts for defects such as runs, drips, sags, bubbles, or inadequate coverage; perform touch-ups or re-coating as necessary.
Maintenance and Safety
· Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on the powder coat booth, spray guns, curing ovens, and ventilation systems.
· Cleanliness: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including powder management and disposal.
· Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators, gloves, and safety glasses.
Qualifications
· Minimum of 1-3 years of experience operating manual or automated electrostatic powder coating equipment in a manufacturing environment.
· Proven ability to accurately measure and achieve target film thicknesses (using a thickness gauge).
· Knowledge of various powder types (epoxy, polyester, hybrid) and their specific application and curing requirements.
· Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality finishes.
· Ability to read and understand technical specifications, work orders, and safety guidelines.
Preferred
· Experience with wet paint application is a plus.
· Experience in a lean manufacturing environment.
· High school diploma or equivalent.
Physical Requirements
· Ability to stand for long periods of time.
· Ability to lift and maneuver parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
· Tolerance for wearing a respirator and other required PPE for extended periods.
· Comfortable working in an environment with exposure to noise, heat (from ovens), and airborne particulate matter.
