Mentor, Coach, Behavioral Guide for Young Man in Petaluma

California, San francisco bay area 00000 San francisco bay area USA

Our son is 24 and needs somebody to work with him to help him build a full, independent life. He is funny, strong-willed and has a good heart. He also has great difficulty with some cognitive tasks that come easily to most people - scheduling, budgeting, planning etc - and has had a history of behavioral issues stemming primarily from anxiety, which is sometimes expressed as anger and frustration.

He has made some real efforts to find his first job, but nothing has come close to working out. It’s unclear how much of this is because of his organizational difficulties in returning calls and emails and how much is the nature of the job market. He spends most days in his room and needs to be pushed to get out, be productive and do the things he enjoys, mostly around the outdoors (he is very into fishing for bass).

We’re looking for somebody who can help him learn the basic organizational and life skills he needs, and to help him build confidence in himself and his ability to become fully independent.

This would involve being with our son three to four times a week for a total of 15-20 hours, at our house (West Petaluma, Sonoma County), but also out in the community, looking for work, being social and being active.

Ideally you would have experience in working with young adults, be able to provide structure, boundaries and direction, but be flexible enough to work with a person who is both very smart in some ways and has real blind spots in others. You are able to deal with moments of strong emotion without being phased. Our son responds to energy and enthusiasm and loves the outdoors, so if that also describes you, then great!

In terms of education, it would be great if you have a BA degree or higher in Psychology, Behavior Analysis, Recreational or Rehabilitative Therapy, or Education.

Approximately $30 an hour, depending on number of hours per week and background.

Send us an email with a description of your experience and why you’d be great at the job!

We look forward to talking with you.
