Description of JobThis position provides delivery of mental health services at an advanced practice level to a special population of inmates housed in the Colorado Department of Corrections with mental illness. Care is in compliance with mental health guidelines to include assessment of mental health needs, individual and group therapy, monitoring of inmates with mental illness; working with other staff regarding the mental health needs of inmates, assisting in the management of inmates with mental illness or mental problems, or other special needs populations as identified, provide training regarding needs and issues. This position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
Provide direct care in case of psychiatric crises or emergencies;
Provide 24-hour on-call mental health coverage;
Provide mental health care to special population of inmates with mental illness, developmental disabilities and high risk for suicide and self injury. Assigned cased load will consist primarily of offenders with a psychiatric needs level of P3;
Develop Mental Health treatment plans to serve as the basis for treatment;
Perform routine mental health assessments and interviews determine progress;
Refer clients for diagnostic clarification and/or for recommendations if presentation is complex or not responding to interventions/accommodations;
Facilitate consultation and collaboration to non-clinical staff in the care and treatment of inmates;
Review records, screen, evaluate inmates to assess for crises, develop interventions/accommodations, document contacts and write directives;
Assure continuity of care for inmates by making appropriate referral and providing necessary information and documentation for transition to receiving units, facilities, or agencies;
Conduct mental health watch rounds;
Document inmate mental health records;
Inform inmates regarding their mental health care;
Promote and is accountable for the safety and security of the clinical and correctional environment;

Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;
Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;
Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
Swing a baton in a striking technique;
Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;

TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;
