- ABOUT THE MAUI FARM -

The Maui Farm is transitional housing for single mothers and their children who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness due to domestic violence, substance abuse, or economic hardship. TMF offers individualized case management and farm-based programs on a 2 acre therapeutic and educational farm.

- PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES -

- Supports the delivery of the Family Strengthening Program and Farm Programs for the Community

- Daily operations and routine maintenance of the farm, including agricultural gardens, crop fields, plant nursery, greenhouse, and animal husbandry program, using sustainable agriculture and permaculture practices.

- ESSENTIAL DUTIES -

Family Strengthening Program

- Assists in the facilitation and coordination of all farm-based programs including Community Garden, Job-Readiness, Womens Empowerment Group and Keiki Program

- Provides clerical assistance and supports grant reporting, data tracking, and fundraising as assigned.

Farm Programs for the Community

- Works collaboratively with all staff on the planning and implementation of educational field trips, site visits, volunteer/service projects, and internships on the farm.

Farm Operations & Maintenance

- Performs cropping field duties including, site preparation, planting, watering, weeding, fertilizing, pest control, and harvesting.

- Performs plant nursery duties including watering and fertilizing, plant propagation, transplanting, and more.

- Maintains farm areas including pathways, animal environments, composting area, and other areas as assigned.

- Performs cleaning and clearing of field gardens, plant nursery, bananas, windbreak area, and other areas as assigned.

- Coordinates with staff on the preparation of planting schedule with projected harvest dates. Solicits input from program participants on recommended foods to plant.

- Operates farm equipment including (but not limited to) mowers, weed eaters, and leaf blower; may operate tractor or farm truck and uses picks, rakes, shovels, sickles, backpack sprayers, and other tools as needed.

- Performs duties in the compost area including uncovering/covering compost piles, turning piles with and without tractor, and more.

- Performs routine maintenance and repair of farm equipment, animal environments, storage areas, grounds and maintenance equipment, fence lines and gates, and irrigation systems as directed.

- Uses the theory and practices of sustainable agriculture, permaculture design, and therapeutic gardening.

Animal Caretaking Responsibilities

- Assists with the care and feeding of farm animals as assigned on the monthly calendar. As directed, implements a regular schedule of worming, medication regimens, and other animal- specific activities.

- Performs teaches and models appropriate care and feeding of all farm animals.

- Cleans animal pens and transports manure to the compost area.

- Cuts grass and other fodder from the farm for use in feeding animals.

- MENTAL & PHYSICAL DEMANDS -

The Program Assistant must be in good health, and have the physical ability to operate farm equipment, and engage in daily physical labor activities including but not limited to pushing, bending, lifting and carrying; and able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. The responsibilities of this position require effective organizational skills, time management skills, and the ability to manage multiple and varied tasks.

Requires working under occasional pressure; working with individuals and groups; dealing with difficult people and situations; and establishing and maintaining cooperative and productive work relationships. Requires following the agency’s procedures and professional guidelines. May require travel in personal vehicle and/or agency-owned vehicle.

- SKILLS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS -

- High School Diploma or GED

- Previously demonstrated experience in farming, gardening, farm/grounds maintenance

- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral communication.

- Ability to understand and work professionally and compassionately with participants, staff, and volunteers.

- Demonstrates personal awareness of and sensitivity to ethnic/cultural values and practices

- Excellent multi-tasking skills and highly adaptable

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

- Medical examination and negative Tuberculosis (TB) skin test or TB clearance

- Clear criminal and child welfare background checks

- Valid ID or Driver’s License

- WORK HOURS -

A set schedule of forty (40) hours per week; generally, Tuesday through Saturday 8:00am- 4:00 pm. Flexibility in accepting changing workdays and hours to meet agency need is required.

- SALARY SCALE -

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Starting salary for the Program Assistant will be $41,600/year or $20/hour. Salary scales shall be reviewed and adjusted periodically by the Board of Directors.
