Position Overview:

We need you to help us keep up with our growing Manufacturing Services demand to deliver state-of-the-art, custom-engineered, machine-based friction welding solutions to our customers in aerospace, automotive, construction & agriculture, defense, mining, oil and gas, and various other fields. This is a Monday-Friday, first-shift, hourly position.

As a Machine Setup Technician for Manufacturing Technology, based in South Bend, Indiana, you will be responsible for the setup and operation of friction welding machines in the Manufacturing Services division. You will be doing a variety of duties including but not limited to: Identifying, retrieving, and installing required fixtures and tooling to setup friction welding machines for operation, operating friction welders and other machines to make parts per individual customer specifications, loading and unloading parts, using indicators, calipers, height gauges, etc. to inspect parts to ensure they meet customer specifications. Adjustingmachine settings to maintain required part tolerances, responding to and resolving machine fault/error messages, helping create work instructions, SOPs, and other process and training materials. Helping drive improvement through application of lean manufacturing concepts and participation in corrective and preventative action events.

The ideal candidate for this position will have experience in a manufacturing environment and knows how to setup and operate machinery. They will demonstrate strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, be familiar with reading and interpreting part prints, have aptitude for use of hand tools, and be reliable and attentive to quality demands.

Experience driving a forklift, using manual or CNC lathes, surface grinders, and mills would be preferred, but not necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

Work safe and use of PErsonal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Makes fixture and chuck changeovers, performs fixture and chuck alignments using dial indicators, sets both physical and software based overtravel limits required to run a particular part.

Maintains welders which may include replacing worn tooling such as collets, collet pads, or fixture pads, cleaning equipment using solvent and rags, and lubricating equipment as needed.

Starts machine, loads and unloads work pieces (lifting work pieces manually or using hoist), secures work piece in machine and observes machine operation.

Inspects and measures welded parts to verify conformance to customer specifications using instruments such as indicators, calipers, and height gauges.

Accurately fills out inspection data sheets (handwritten and/or computer based) per required inspection plan frequency.

Works along side Process Engineers to setup and run research and development jobs.

Use forklift/lift truck to move parts and tooling between welding, storage, and shipping areas.

Communicates with co-workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities.

Creates or helps create work instructions, SOPs, or other training materials

Required Skills and Competencies:

Mechanical aptitude

Basic math skills (addition, subtractions, multiplication, division)

Familiarity with blueprints

Computer literacy

Critical thinking/problem solving ability

Aptitude with common measurement tools such as dial indicators, calipers, height gauges, and micrometers.

Familiarity with GD&T and measurements such as total indicator runout, concentricity, parallelism, perpendicularity, overall length, etc. Be able to adjust tooling/setup to maintain tolerances <0.020” for these requirements.

Familiarity working within ISO9001, AS9100, NADCAP or other accredited quality system environment.

Familiarity with Lean manufacturing concepts, corrective and preventative action, and/or Six Sigma

Willingness, and ability, to help train others

Able to work independently or within a team

Strong communication and teamwork

Must conduct oneself with the highest level of professional and ethical standards

Desire to contribute to Safety, Quality, and Culture
