Enterprise Infrastructure Services(EIS), within OIT, architects, engineers, and operates the campus- and cloud-based IT infrastructure services that support the University’s mission. The Virtualization Engineer is part of the Infrastructure Operations team and works closely with colleagues in other OIT groups as well as technical staff in University departments to provide secure and robust virtualization infrastructure in support of the functions of the University. Responsibilities for this position include engineering and administration of virtual infrastructure to deliver secure, high-quality services, addressing day-to-day operational tasks including monitoring, troubleshooting, optimizing, and delivering project-based outcomes. The engineer collaborates as a member of the team responsible for managing the University's central Windows, Linux, Virtualization, storage, and backup systems, both on-premises and in the cloud. The position includes on-call and after-hours duties, as required. ResponsibilitiesManage and maintain the enterprise virtualization platform of 1600+ virtual machines for optimum performance and security across multiple data centers Perform daily management, monitoring and administration of Virtualization Platform, Windows Servers, Linux systems and various infrastructure technologies Ensure compliance with asset, change, incident, and problemmanagementprocessesand policies Provide accurate and timely documentation as well as change and problem management information Respond to after-hours alerts, incidents, and outages as part of the on-call support rotation When provided access to personal, proprietary and/or otherwise confidential data, maintain such data in the strictest confidence and follow procedures to ensure the privacy, security and proper use of data Works closely with OIT groups and technical staff in University departments to deliver a robust, resilient, and secure virtualization infrastructure to meet University needs Develop scripts to automate tasks related to systems operations and continuous process improvement within the environment Create, validate, and initiate testing and implementation plans to rollout new virtual platforms or to upgrade existing virtualization infrastructure Create and improve processes and policies for virtualization infrastructure operations Provide technical expertise in the resolution of complex infrastructure problems Participate in other special projects, duties, and assignments as required Learn the functions of new products to facilitate the use of emerging technology Assist in training team members and colleagues QualificationsEssential QualificationsAt least five years of progressively responsible experience in maintaining, and supporting enterprise hypervisor environments such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, or Nutanix Acropolis Demonstrated success in migrating VMs from one platform to another Experience with Windows Server administration, on-prem or in the cloud Proficiency in programming or scripting using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or API REST Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructures, such as Azure, AWS, or GCP Excellent oral and written communication skills Proven ability to continually learn new approaches and skills beyond areas of expertise as IT infrastructure and services change over time Demonstrated successes working in a collaborative environment, leading small projects, delivering solutions, and working independently Ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience Preferred QualificationsUnderstanding of IT Service Management (ITIL v3 or above) and of ServiceNow Experience in more than one of the following hypervisor environments: VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, or Nutanix Acropolis Experience with HPE SimpliVity hyper-converged infrastructure Practiced in Agile methodologies Familiar with Linux system administration Familiar with firewall concepts or micro-segmentation methodologies Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
