Job DescriptionONLY OPEN TO CURRENT FULL-TIME ANNUALLY PAID PARKS EMPLOYEESThe mission of the Natural Resources Group (NRG) within the Division of Environment and Planning is to protect, restore, expand, and manage New York City’s natural spaces and green infrastructure to maximize their ecological and social benefits for all New Yorkers. The Division is responsible for planning, citywide urban forestry, and ecological and horticulture initiatives. The Stewardship Team, within NRG, supports the Division and engages the public by providing diverse opportunities for direct care of natural resources and the urban forest across the City.Major Responsibilities

Under general direction, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, coordinate and direct stewards in caring for Parks’ assets across multiple landscape types, including engagement, outreach, communications and documentation.

Develop and implement training for volunteers with a focus on vegetation removals in natural areas, restoration plantings, forest management, erosion control, clean-ups, street tree care and other service projects.

Maintain accurate and timely records and prepare written reports, including review and quality assurance of field work tracking forms and maps submitted by volunteers. Coordinate transfer of Volunteer reports to the Natural Areas Management Application and summarize the accomplishments of stewards for regular reports.

Coordinate volunteer efforts with other work happening within and outside the division, with local park managers, local community groups and other agencies. Facilitate permitting and coordination of stewards’ work with borough operations and other entities as needed.

Support the coordination of tools, supplies, and vehicles needed to advance the work of local volunteer networks.

Scope and acquire the resources necessary to execute volunteer projects across landscapes, in support of stewards. Recruit additional staff from the Stewardship team as needed for volunteer training and volunteer led events.

Guide volunteers in the selection of appropriate project sites and scopes. Coordinate support of advanced volunteers in support of division work as needed, with a special focus on priority projects requested by colleagues at the Natural Resources Group.

Support and encourage a growing and engaged stewardship network, including identifying ongoing needs and creating sustainable workflows for resource provision and pathways for generating community and conversation.

Supervise employees and volunteers and instruct them in proper restoration techniques and the proper use and care of equipment and materials including two-cycle equipment such as hedge-trimmers and chainsaws.

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
