GENERAL PURPOSE:Monitors and tracks the use of radioactive materials throughout the University system to ensure compliance with NYS Department of Health and federal guidelines. Prepares reports, evaluates results, reports violations, and applies knowledge to improve the safety of patients and staff within the university.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Surveys medical and research laboratories using isotopes to monitor for possible contamination and measures radiation levels to ensure that radiation exposure is as low as reasonably achievable and within regulatory requirements. Makes recommendations for improvements in contamination control or shielding. Determines appropriate laboratory posting and ensures that postings reflect current radiological status of laboratories.

Monitors and tracks University-wide radioactive material inventory, both sealed and unsealed, as required by New York State, including the shipment and receipt of packages containing radioactive materials, in compliance with both Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations.

Collects and prepares radioactive waste for disposal in accordance with applicable regulations.

Monitors patients, procedures and/or rooms involved with the treatment of radioactive implants or doses of radio-isotopes.

Assists in the quality assurance testing of research and medical X-ray producing equipment.

Performs calibrations and minor maintenance on hand-held radiation monitoring instrumentation.

Other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS:Associate's degree in Safety Technology, Environmental Management Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences or other related field required. 3 years of experience required or equivalent combination of education and work-related experience. Experience handling radioactive materials or operating X-ray producing equipment preferred. Computer skills, with experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint required. Strong organizational skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
