ResponsibilitiesThe WOC Nurse works primarily with adult ostomy patients in all aspects of ostomy care and functions as a consultant for Colorectal and Urology Service to meet the ostomy and wound care needs of patients. Pre-operative stoma site marking and post procedure teaching for ostomy surgery, primarily adults, but may include some of the pediatric population. Works closely with surgical teams to assure standards of care are met for all ostomy patients. The WOC Nurse provides expert resources for nursing staff; works closely with nursing unit leadership to establish unit-based ostomy specialists. Develops educational programs for nurses and patients to assure standards of care are met for management of ostomies. Utilizes evidence-based nursing practice in making recommendations related to treatments of wounds to improve outcomes. Works collaboratively with other WOC Nurses to manage all ostomy consults, and other teams to achieve excellent patient outcomes with HAPI prevention and wound healing. Sits on selected hospital committees as needed to represent ostomy care. Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential, and the ideal candidate must demonstrate strong teamwork behaviors. Requirements: 3-years acute care experience and Wound and Ostomy certification in process or established.Qualifications Baccalaureate degree and NYS registered professional nurse required. Experience working as a wound and ostomy nurse preferred. Strong communication skills, organizational skills, ability to alter or change stylistic approach depending on the needs of the client, ability to collaborate with peers and leadership required.
