Description of WorkThis is an anticipated vacancy.This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits (https://oshr.nc.gov/state-employee-resources/benefits) , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This posting is for an Electronics Technician I position in the Division 9 Traffic Services Unit. This position is responsible for training subordinate electronic technicians and verifying that their day-to-day field work is in compliance with NCDOT Standards. Employee must have the ability to direct and supervise work by others. Position will assist in and construct signal installations and is responsible for diagnosis of malfunctions in traffic signal equipment. Position operates 24K signal bucket truck; assists in and constructs signal installations, including installation of aerial span wire and cable; assists in installation of vehicle sensors in the pavement and the wiring of complex cabinets; performs skilled work in the diagnosis of malfunctions in both microprocessor-based and solid-state traffic signal controllers and cabinets to the module level. Position reads and interprets drawings and wire diagrams and performs the necessary installation and repair, utilizing both hand tools and field test equipment and responds to emergency maintenance calls both during and after normal working hours.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesApplicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.

Knowledge of the National Electric Code.

Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal supervision.

Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions.

Additional Expectations:The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.Employees must be able to lift 80 pounds, shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 60 feet in height without accommodations. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. The employee shall have the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signals and other traffic control devices. Employees must possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and excessive heat conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic, and heavy construction.Safety toe shoes required.Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsSome state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
