Job OverviewThe primary purpose of this position is to interact with donors to collect blood products.Performs a variety of duties on a rotating basis in various sections to include phlebotomy,registration, vitals, and donor recovery. Degree/Education: High School equivalent and completion of a donor Phlebotomy program accredited by the Joint Commission or CAP
Certification/registration as a Phlebotomy Technician, Donor Phlebotomy Technician, or equivalent by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Medical Technologists, or other agency approved by the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs)ASD(HA).
Certificate: Basic Life Support
Experience: Must have performed 50 successful donor collections with an accredited laboratory within the last two years.
Computer Literacy: Knowledge and ability to use computers and technology efficiently.
Training and competency (ACLS, BLS, CPRS)
Health Restrictions: Employees will have no health or physical disability restrictions that interfere with the performance of duties. This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. The additional immunization/screening requirements for the risk of exposure to hepatitis virus (Hep B) and screening for tuberculosis (TB)
Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:
Interact with donors to collect blood products. Performs a variety of duties on a rotating basis in various sections to include phlebotomy, registration, vitals, and donor recovery. Interact with donors and staff in a tactful, professional, and courteous manner.
Draw blood samples on adults; review collection kit to ensure all required information is present; determine types of specimens to be collected and if proper patient preparation has been accomplished; select appropriate venipuncture site and clean to ensure contamination-free field, taking into account any adverse reaction to cleaning solutions if indicated by Soldier/civilian or medical personnel.
Perform routine and complicated venipuncture. Applies sterile dressing to the site and instructs donors on the care required to prevent infection and/or bruising. Provide immediate care to donors who may faint or become nauseous during the procedure. Collect specimens into appropriate anticoagulant, preservative, or clot tubes as required by the test requested.
Perform and document results of waived Point of Care Testing in the Vitals Section. Perform quality control and routine maintenance according to local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Label specimens following the SOP. Follows all regulatory regulations (e.g., Food and Drug Administration, AABB, and College of American Pathologists) and safety guidelines for sample shipment and handling of all specimens. Follow infection control regulations in handling, storage, packaging, and disposal of biohazard materials. Determine the specimen(s) to be collected for the laboratory work to be performed based on the laboratory requisition or clinical orders entered in the hospital information system.
Must be able to explain the procedure for collection of specimens to the donor.
Determine by SOPs and other guides how specimens must be processed and stored. Operate centrifuge to separate specimens. Refrigerate, store at room temperature, or freeze specimens as required. Maintain strict confidentiality of all testing results.
Instruct and monitor various phlebotomy personnel or students on rotation in phlebotomy techniques.
Areas of concern include patient identification, site selection, site preparation, blood collection, specimen labeling, patient care, blood handling techniques, and emergency treatment of adverse phlebotomy reactions. Order appropriate laboratory testing required in CHCS/AHLTA, maintain supplies and equipment, maintain adequate supplies in patient care areas, monitor stock levels and expiration dates of available collection tubes, and replenish, when required. Clean and wipe equipment, monitor supplies, and pull outdated stock. Assemble equipment, verify correct instrument operation, and report defects.
Receive donors, and visitors and answer telephone calls. Determine the nature of the inquiry. Direct the inquiry to the appropriate section. Take and relay messages. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the section at all times.
