Staff Accountants

The Housing Authority of the City of Wilmington is seeking two Staff Accountants. A copy of the full job description can be accessed from the website at www.wha.net. GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE POSITION

The Staff Accountant performs various functions within the Finance Department. This position uses Accounting/Property management system to assist property managers and housing choice voucher caser workers with their management responsibilities. Assists in posting and reconciling related tenant schedules and statements. This position is responsible for the monthly postings and reconciliation of fixed assets. The position also serves as backup for all functions of the payroll clerk. Responsible for preparing month-end close accounting entries and bank reconciliations. This position reports to the Controller.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leads by example and serves as a role model for the standards and behaviors consistent with the core values and culture of the company.

Ensures cross-trained as backup for Accounts Payable position. Assists in performing Accounts Payable functions, including processing of Housing Choice Voucher and Housing Assistance payments when Accounts Payable Clerk is unavailable.

Assists with the implementation of the fixed assets in our current accounting system. Responsible for additions, disposals and reconciliation of fixed asset records.

Responsible for allocation of hard and soft fixed asset costs to all our public housing and affordable properties.

Responsible for revising and calculating monthly excess utility calculations for all residents. Also responsible for uploading excess utility calculations to all appropriate resident ledgers.

Assists with the reconciliation, analysis and maintenance of general ledger accounts.

Assists with the preparation of monthly financial statements and analysis reports as needed.

Manages payroll and reports associated with benefits.

Preparation of month-end close journal entries and bank reconciliations including all check-writing Operating Accounts.

Prepares various schedules and documentation for external auditors.

Maintains privacy and confidentiality of information.

Any other duties and responsibilities to accomplish the mission of this position and the mission of the company and its affiliates.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Demonstrated ability to use time-management skills to achieve success with schedules, workloads, and deadlines.

Must possess proficient data entry and computer skills, especially Excel, and the ability to use and manage computer files, use databases and create spreadsheets.

Must manage files and documents, follow recordkeeping requirements and maintain confidentiality.

Requires strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and colleagues; and to provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.

Qualified applicant should be a high school graduate with experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, accounting, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from high school or GED required; college degree preferred.

Minimum four (4) years experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, and accounting.

Experience in an area directly related to the position may substitute for the educational requirements.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
