The Research Scientist will provide technical support to DoD-sponsored flight and altitude research and training conducted by the Aerospace Physiology, Neuroscience, and Biodynamics laboratories of the Air Force Research Laboratory.This position will support and lead biomedical research focused on understanding the normal human response to flight and space, and developing, testing, and delivering countermeasures to those untoward responses that may affect crew health, safety, and/or performance during or after missions.The ideal candidate will possess skills to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of physiology and/or engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Makes decisions independently on simple research problems and methods. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.Responsibilities:

Perform work that involves conventional research practices

Design and develop software and hardware for data collection and testing, including modifications to commercial off the shelf systems, limited in-house electromechanical modification and/or working with outside vendors for experiment software/hardware deliverables

Collect, reduce, collate, analyze, and archive operational, flight, flight analog, and ground data

Analyze experimental data and recommend modifications to analysis procedures and analytical methods; develop and modify software for data reduction and analysis

Operate specialized equipment used in tests on human subjects

Operate data acquisition systems during hardware verification, science verification, and actual data acquisition from human subjects

Evaluate hardware for potential acquisition, contact vendors for information, and initiate procurement

Assist in the preparation of human research protocols, technical reports, presentations, and manuscripts

Develop safety documentation for test readiness reviews and meetings related to the development and implementation of human research protocols, detailed test plans, etc.

Contribute to the formulation and documentation of standard procedures in the laboratory

Participate as a member of a research team working closely with principal investigators, pilots/astronauts, subjects, support scientists, and engineers

Develop a thorough knowledge of KBR’s policies and procedures governing the use of human test subjects

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

Master’s Degree plus 3+ years of experience, or equivalent experience in kinesiology, aerospace physiology, biomedical or mechanical engineering, or a closely allied field

Must be skilled in the design, testing, evaluation, and integration of biosensor instrumentation intended for use with human subjects

Ability to independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria and use judgment to make decisions to provide engineering solutions to problems

Knowledge of human physiology to understand biomedical experiments designed to characterize the human adaptive response to space flight and space flight analogs

Able to work effectively both in small teams and independently and work effectively in a multidisciplinary setting where there are frequently divergent or competing goals for the project implementation and outcome

Previous experience working with test subjects

Advanced PC Skills in Microsoft Office products

Superb communication skills

Desired Experience & Skills:

Experience with biomedical measures, real-time data acquisition systems, and signal processing from Motion Tracking, EMG, EEG, ECG, etc.

Human subject research experience

IRB protocol management
