Job duties to include:
Inspecting and measuring: Use rulers, squares, tape measure or caliper rules to inspect and measure workpieces to mark for cuts and verify cut accuracy.
Adjusting saws: Use wrenches, rulers, handwheels, pedals, levers, or panel buttons to adjust saw blades.
Installing blades: Mount and bolt sawing blades or attachments to machine shafts.
Operating saws: Feed material into the saw and monitor its operation to ensure accurate cuts.
Setting up guides: Set stops or guides to specified lengths.
Looking for issues: Keep an eye out for defects or other issues while operating the saw.
Packing and transporting: Help pack and transport finished pieces.
Completing paperwork: Accurately complete paperwork.
Shipping and receiving
Loading and unloading delivery items, making sure deliveries match purchase orders, and managing the shipping and receiving of materials
Inventory
Maintaining and recording inventory, participating in physical inventories, and adding or deleting supplies as they are received or shipped
Quality checks
Inspecting incoming materials for damage and performing quality checks
Storage
Ensuring materials are stored in the proper location and keeping loading and docking areas clear
Equipment
Using equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks to transport materials
Other tasks
Cleaning machinery, dumping chip hoppers, emptying trash cans, providing customer service, preparing NCRs, using ERP system, and coordinating disposal of surplus property
Material handlers should have good communication skills, including written, verbal, and active listening skills. They also need to be able to understand directions and follow instructions correctly. The job can be physically demanding, with material handlers often lifting light weight material and occasionally lifting or moving heavier material. They may also need to push, pull, bend, kneel, twist, crawl, and reach over for extended periods of time, as well as stand and walk constantly. In addition, they may be exposed to noise levels that require hearing protection.
