Job Summary: The Maintenance Technician (“MT”) utilizes general carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and customer service knowledge to perform basic maintenance and repairs at library properties throughout Allegheny County. Responsibilities include preventative maintenance, basic repairs, cosmetic upkeep, and simple appliance installations using their ability to safely operate hand and power tools along with some maintenance related machinery. The MT will also be able to recognize when a repair is outside of their skill set and make a recommendation to their supervisor.

Essential Functions:
Performs basic maintenance and repairs at library properties throughout Allegheny County;
Minor alterations and adjustments to furniture, cabinets and other equipment;
Scrape, sand and prepare surfaces for painting or repairing;
Apply finishes to various surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, plaster, stucco, wall boards, brick and cement;
Clean and maintain equipment and supplies;
Minor repairs and adjustments to plumbing equipment and apparatus such as repair leaking pipes, clean plugged drains and flush sewer lines;
Minor lock repairs; remove and replace fixtures, socket drop cords, switches, exposed wiring; adjust and maintain switches, electric motors, fans and heaters;
Assist maintenance crafts with repairs, installation and alterations on Library properties;
Clean and maintain HVAC supply and return grilles;
Install ceiling and floor coverings, chair rails, and baseboards;
Remove broken window glass and perform board ups when specialized equipment is not needed;
Perform related duties as assigned.
Competencies and Qualifications:
General knowledge in the following trades: Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting, HVAC, Electrical, and general repairs in a commercial building; certifications in any of these trades would be beneficial;
Knowledge of basic tools, materials and terminology used in one or more trades; methods and practices followed in the maintenance of building, machines, and equipment;
Fundamental knowledge of ADA and OSHA regulations; standard practices and safety procedures;
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities;
Effective interpersonal communication and customer service skills, both written and verbal;
Ability to:

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or G.E.D. with solid math skills;
Three years of semi-skilled building maintenance experience, including use of related hardware tools and electrical equipment;
Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems;
Current, valid Pennsylvania driver’s license that has been maintained for at least six (6) years; with a clean driving record for at least the past three (3) years.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Perform physically demanding labor that may include standing and maneuvering for long periods of time; work in an outside environment subject to inclement weather conditions, possible and/or frequent exposure to sun, humidity, and high or low temperatures; work around loud machinery, noise and/or pronounced vibration; exposure to dust and allergens; regularly work with or exposed to materials such as oils, grease, solvents, glues, adhesives, cleaning and de-greasing solutions and other chemicals.
Requires ability to reach, grasp, pull, push, and carry various equipment and furniture across various types of surfaces; frequent maneuvering, stooping, crouching, bending at waist and knees; maneuver, twist, crawl and work in confined and cramped spaces (such as attics, crawl spaces, closets, etc.); twist body up to 45 degree angle; frequent stretching, reaching and kneeling while operating tools and equipment.
Must use proper bending and lifting techniques, will lift and/or carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) with or without assistance (from floor level to above shoulder level); climb and descend 8 to 16 foot ladders and/or stairs (with heavy objects with or without assistance). Work may be performed on wet or slippery surfaces; wear personal protective and safety equipment when appropriate and/or required (including a respirator); operate and manipulate hand, electric and all types of structural tools and equipment; exposure to sharp blades from tools and equipment.

Current office technologies including computers, printers, faxes, telephones and copiers; use hand and power tools necessary to perform the duties assigned; other equipment common to the work needed.
