DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSTroubleshoots, maintains, manages, and upgrades existing instrumentation and low voltage electrical systems to ensure accuracy, effectiveness, and reliability. Researches and analyzes cause of failures; repairs, performs calibrations, replaces, and installs new equipment/components and related hardware to maximize functionality. Performs preventive maintenance ensuring safe, clean, and continuous operating conditions. Prepares and updates various records, logs, and reports. Responds to emergency calls during and after hours for various types of instrumentation and low voltage electrical failures and shutdowns. Documents and monitors work assignments in a Work Management System (INFOR). Research technical product specifications. Inspects field locations to determine appropriate types and placement of instrumentation components for installation.WORKING CONDITIONSThis position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. Occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than optimal temperature and air conditions. This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier 1 Level.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires an Associate's degree (two-year program) in a computer science, instrumentation, or electronics discipline or the equivalent, such as certification in a technical/specialty program of up to three years in duration.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSOne year of experience in the design, installation, operation and/or maintenance of a computerized data network or industrial control system is required. Relevant experience (as described above) may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.LICENSE REQUIREMENTSValid Texas Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).In the Public Works and Engineering Department, may be required to obtain a valid class "C" or higher Texas Water or Wastewater Plant Operator's license within one year of employment.PREFERENCESPreference will be given to the candidate with wireless radio communication experience, State of Texas Electrical Journeymen License, knowledge of Siemens PLC’s.Preference shall also be given to candidates that possess a valid class “C” or higher Texas Water Plant Operator’s license.Preference will be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.GENERAL INFORMATIONSELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED: NoneHowever, the department may administer a skills assessment test.SAFETY IMPACT POSITION: YesIf yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.SALARY INFORMATIONFactors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.PAY GRADE 17APPLICATION PROCEDURESOnly online applications will be accepted for this City of Houston job and must be received by the Human Resources Department during active posting period.
