ABOUT THE LITERACY LAB

The education system in the United States continues to be deeply impacted by a long history of unjust policies that socio-economically disinvest in communities of color. The Literacy Lab’s mission is to address inequities by providing students – in communities experiencing racial and/or economic inequities d– with evidence-based, culturally responsive literacy instruction as preparation for academic, professional, and personal success. We believe literacy is a human right. When we achieve our mission, we will have created a more just society where all students have the literacy services needed to unlock educational opportunities and success in life.

Since 2009, The Literacy Lab has worked with communities and school districts to provide evidence-based literacy interventions to more than 40,000 children from marginalized communities to enhance their early literacy skills. By embedding rigorously trained Tutors and Fellows in Pre-K classrooms and elementary schools, The Literacy Lab strives to create a full six-year continuum of support for young readers.

ELIGIBILITY

At a minimum, our Fellows must:

- Be recent high school graduates

- Have received a high school diploma, GED, or equivalency by June 2024

- Consent to a background check and be eligible to work legally in the United States

- Not have a four year college degree

POSITION

The Literacy Lab recognizes that ensuring all students have the chance to read proficiently is an urgent and critical need. The Leading Men Fellowship (https://theliteracylab.org/leading-men/) prepares young men of color to serve as literacy tutors (i.e. Fellows) in pre-K classrooms for an entire school year (10 months for Fellows who start in August 2024) implementing evidence-based literacy intervention strategies to set students on the path to Kindergarten readiness and long-term success. This position is intended for young men who are recent high school graduates and have not earned a four year degree.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Leading Men Fellows work 5 days a week, 5 hours per day, at a rate of $16.50 - $18.00 an hour, and receive rigorous, career-focused experience while shaping the academic and life trajectories of their students. After completing the Fellowship, Leading Men Fellows are supported throughout the process of applying for college, seeking employment opportunities in the education and nonprofit sectors, and continuous engagement with the community.

At a minimum, a Fellow must:

- Work in a part-time capacity, 5 hours/day, Monday through Friday, between approximately 8 am - 2 pm, subject to school site placement

- Commit to working a full 10 month school year (August 2024 - June 2025). Subject to change based on start time after August 2024

- Partake in all required professional development trainings

- Implement feedback from coaches and program staff

- Utilize specific data-based and scripted curriculum

- Participate in ongoing training, and other Literacy Lab events and meetings

- All other duties as assigned by program and/or coaching staff

BENEFITS

Over the course of their work, Fellows receive:

$16.50 - $18.00/hour

- OH, VA, WI - $16.50/hour

- AZ, GA, MD -$17.00/hour

- Washington DC - $18.00/hour

- A $120 monthly transportation and communication stipend

- A $2,500 higher education award (contingent on meeting all programmatic expectations)

- Weekly professional development trainings

- Mentorship by professional educators

- Ongoing coaching and feedback

- Support from Literacy Lab staff in the college application process
