Additionally, all employees are expected to contribute to the department's educational mission through constructive mentorship, meaningful feedback, and supportive collaboration with students.POSITION PURPOSE This position is the lead staff member responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining costumes and accessories for UW Department of Dance productions (typically four concerts per year). This is a part-time, temporary (i.e., seasonal) position with appointment dates that may range from a single concert production (minimum) to a full, annual concert season (maximum).This position requires extensive independent work; a variable schedule; detail-oriented planning and communication; and the ability to plan, track, and communicate time and resource limitations within and across projects.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Costume Design & Procurement (30%)

Under the general supervision of the Artistic Director(s), work directly with choreographers on designing cast costumes to meet the needs of the performance within available resources.

Design process may involve creating original costumes for new works or recreating/re-envisioning costumes for repertory works.

Research costuming materials or clothing items for choreographers (e.g., develop and propose buy-lists, etc.).

Work closely with the Department Administrator (and other staff) for purchasing and documentation of expenses (including required expense reconciliation).

Be in dialogue with the choreographer about the materials costs so the choreographer can stay on budget for costuming materials.

Collaborate with the UW School of Drama costume shop for the use (and return) of existing costume stock (as well as appropriate use of costume shop equipment and facilities).Costume Construction (50%)

Under the general supervision of the Artistic Director(s), work directly with choreographers on patterning, and costume construction, fitting, and altering as needed.

Draft and/or drape original patterns by either developing a pattern from the dancers’ measurements or draping fabric on a dress form to create a pattern based on designs in collaboration with the choreographer.

Construct costumes and accessories from patterns using tailoring techniques, specialty hand sewing, pressing techniques required to shape and stabilize the fabric, and other costume construction methods.Inventory & Restocking (10%)

Ensure costume materials are laundered, inventoried, and stored appropriately

Ensure unused or surplus materials are returned for a full refund whenever possible.Consultations, Supervision, & Other (10%)

Support faculty and students by serving as a topic expert in dance costuming, providing consultations, workshops, and presentations in an educational setting.

When applicable, mentor and direct MFA costume designers from the UW School of Drama in the design of costumes for the MFA Dance Concert.

When applicable, train and supervise costume support staff. (e.g., student wardrobe assistants).

Other duties as assigned by the Department of Dance Chair, the Department of Dance Administrator, and/or the Department of Dance Production Manager.CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENT Part-time

Variable work schedule includes evening and weekend hours

Extensive independent work and time management including planning, tracking, and reallocating time spent on projects within pre-determined limitations. Monitor and manage work time (for self or other costuming personnel) to ensure completion of all tasks within available time. This may include budgeting efforts across multiple shows at different times in a performance season.

Costuming planning and procurement may require the ability to travel locally to shop, inspect materials, etc.

Near and far vision will be required for reading, viewing rehearsals and productions, operating costume construction equipment, conducting fittings, etc.

Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping may be required to perform daily activities.

Grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination may be required in operating equipment, using tools, and preparing costumes.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Two years of college training in costume design and costume or vocational sewing, pattern making, and tailoring, AND 6 or more years of professional theater costuming experience OR equivalent education/experienceDESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s Degree in Theater Design, Costuming, Textile Design, or related field.

3-4 years of increasing responsibility for creating original designs, reconstruction of existing designs, costume construction, and management of costume inventory in a professional and/or educational production setting.

Additional years of professional experience may substitute for degree requirement.

Proficient in use of e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, and other routine (often cloud-based) business tools such as Microsoft 365, Google, etc.University of Washington is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer.
