The Language Learning Center (LLC) creates and provides multimedia resources for people to learn, teach, and research world languages and cultures. The center leads, consults and collaborates with faculty, researchers, and professional organizations in the evaluation, research, and instructional design of language learning pedagogy and technologies. We also teach and train instructors, graduate students, and staff to create and evaluate audio, video, and multimedia computing language learning products as well as collaborate on the development of language learning curricula, and provides hardware, software, and facilities for their development.The first priority of a Language Learning Center director is to support world language faculty and further the teaching of world languages through the effective and pedagogically-sound integration of technology, and the most current and scientifically supported applied linguistic research.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Director of the LLC reports to the Divisional Dean of Humanities and ensures that the center runs smoothly. Specific duties include:Center Management (35%)

The director oversees the day-to-day management of the Center, coordinating the design and implementation of systems of support for world language classes taught in the Center and elsewhere across the University – including, but not limited to placement/exit testing, student recruiting and retention, and assessment of existing language programs. Engaging in strategic planning and thinking, this position endeavors to put systems in place so that the Center will function as smoothly as possible in times of rapid change and maximize the efficacy of resources to address the needs of the division of the humanities.Professional (20%)

The center director provides workshops for faculty to learn new applications of technology to teaching and general language pedagogies, working closely with faculty on the design of teaching strategies appropriate to the technological resources in the LLC, and serving as pedagogical advisor to faculty for curriculum development. The director works with faculty to develop web-based tools, general apps and multimedia products to supplement world language classes. The center director maintains a strong degree of technical competencies relevant to the center operations, facilitating the introduction of new technologies, specialized equipment and technical methodologies.Supervisory (15%)

The center director supervises three professional staff, 2 classified staff, and a few student employees, hiring and training as necessary. The director manage work schedules of all staff and provides professional development opportunities and mentorship.Financial (15%)

The director maintains financial responsibility for the LLC, working with the center staff to ensure fiscal stability. The director secures grants for new programs or projects related to the Center’s mission (e.g., STARTALK, Centers for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity, GenCyber, Open Educational Resource (OER) development)Facilities (10%)

Overseeing the reservations and use of labs, the active learning classroom and other center facilities, the director ensures spaces are shared among college and university partners, used appropriately, and to their maximum potential.Other duties as assigned (5%) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Masters degree, preferably in world languages, education, linguistics, applied linguistics, instructional technology, or other field relevant to the position.

Five years direct and progressive experience in management and administration of a language resource center, or other equivalent experience.Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Broad technical competencies, in particular related to web, IT and multimedia production.

Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, resource management, and budgeting

Demonstrated expertise in language teaching, teacher training and program development

Experience living, studying, and/or working abroad and/or proficiency in a world language(s).DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience in delivery and management of online education.

Knowledge of, and experience with, software development and training.

Knowledge of, and demonstrated commitment to, academic standards and procedures for faculty and curriculum development and student support in a research university context.

Leadership position in a language teaching/technology professional community.

Knowledge of, and experience with, computer assisted language learning.
