GENERAL PURPOSE:Manages fire protection and prevention program for area of assignment. Ensures conformance to fire prevention codes and practices for assigned area University property and programs. Recommends ways to enhance fire protection, fire prevention, and fire safety at the University. Provides technical assistance and training to departments in achieving code compliance with fire safety regulations. Provides input into performance appraisals, other personnel related actions and recommends corrective action for assigned staff.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages fire protection and prevention program for area of assignment. Provides code consultation when responding to customer¿s questions, complaints or concerns. Advises departments on safe office layouts and advises on fire-retardant interior finishes and furnishings. Recommends ways to enhance fire protection, fire prevention, and fire safety at the University.

Directs or performs inspections of all assigned properties for fire safety construction and renovation sites for fire hazards and compliance with existing regulatory codes and standards related to fire and general safety.

Provides input into performance appraisals and other personnel related actions and recommends corrective action for assigned staff. Oversees, directs, and coordinates the inspection and testing programs. Assesses test and inspection reports. Maintains files of findings on all activities and recommends corrective action where needed. Directs follow-up to ensure completion of recommended actions. Supplements testing teams when required.

Advises internal and consultant architects and engineers on all new construction and renovation projects during the design stage. Reviews plans and specifications to ensure compliance with codes and standards up to level of certification. Works with the construction and facilities groups to disconnect and reconnect fire protection equipment based on work activity. Witnesses and evaluates test results of the commissioning of all fire and life safety for any renovation, alteration repair of existing space and all new buildings.

Responds to emergencies, fire alarms, supervisory or troubles, including off-hours, in assigned area and other areas if necessary and participates in Incident Command System to resolve incident. Investigates fires. Collaborates with local Fire Department or facilities to determine cause and extent of fires or alarms. Reports findings and recommends corrective actions to prevent recurrence of fires or alarms. Follows-up on corrective actions taken.

Keeps departments informed of rules, regulations, and policies relating to fire safety, protection, prevention, and general safety, ensuring compliance with those regulations. Provides technical assistance and training to departments in achieving code compliance with fire safety regulations. Keeps departments informed of regulations and changes in regulations and the impact on operations. Advises area department and EH&S management of significant fire protection/prevention deficiencies and assists in defining priorities for corrective action.

Represents the University internally and with outside agencies on matters concerning fire prevention and protection. Serves as a member of appropriate University and local governmental safety committees. Maintains relationships with local Fire Department concerning fire prevention and building familiarization and the Building Bureau for code interpretations.

Develops and conducts training sessions and provides consultation to staff and students on fire related subjects, such as fire prevention, fire safety and emergency preparedness, and conducts fire drills.

Maintains current familiarity with all existing codes, regulations, University policies, and standards related to fire prevention, protection, and general safety. Keeps management informed of impact of changes in regulations. Plans and directs new fire protection and prevention programs when needed.

Collaborates with representatives of governmental agencies, OFPC, insurance carriers, and accreditation organizations in inspections of facilities and reviews of procedures, and closes out findings and open items.

Maintains extensive documentation of all Fire Safety Unit activities related to assigned area, including inspections, fire drills, fires, and any other fire related activities. Directs follow up to ensure completion of recommended actions.

Other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in fire science, administration, safety, engineering technology or related discipline required.

2 years of fire safety experience required or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualified to test fire alarm systems as permitted by National Fire Protection Association 72, National Fire Alarm Code, for inspection, testing and maintenance of fire alarm systems required.

Valid driver¿s license upon hire and Fire Alarm Systems NICET Level 1 within one year required.
